Painted in Cork, from a roof in Laois
I Paint Slate
being small paintings on reclaimed roofing slate, of whatever was growing, crawling or sitting still long enough that week — by Victoria Dobbyn

The slate
It was a roof before it was a painting.
These came off one cottage in Laois that Victoria's mum renovated when Victoria was a child. Nobody could think what to do with them, so they were stacked up and left, and there they stayed for about twenty years — until lockdown, when she went looking for something to do with her hands.
Every piece has a grain and a broken edge no other piece shares, and the shape of the offcut decides what can go on it.
